The Great American Songbook refers to the huge body of american songs to emerge from the first half of the twentieth century, many of which were written for Broadway shows and later to feature in Hollywood films and to make up the repertoires of most of the jazz musicians, singers, and performers from the 1920s right through to today where it's relevance and place are guaranteed for the foreseeable future.
The best known composers of these works are George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Jimmy Van Heusen, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and there are many, many more.
